Certificate of Appropriateness
Each building project in downtown Bessemer requires a "Certificate of Appropriateness" - a document that shows approval for the project has been obtained from the Bessemer Historic Preservation Commission. The commission sets design standards for all building projects within a defined geographic area of downtown Bessemer (comprising the central business district). The commission holds regular monthly meetings to review building design proposals. Commission approval and the issuance of a certificate of appropriateness must be obtained on design elements BEFORE a building permit can be obtained from the city's Building and Inspection Services Department
